Universal has released its first trailer for Tom Hooper’s film adaptation of “Les Misérables,” ahead of its Dec. 14 opening, and it offers many tantalizing glimpses of Hollywood A-listers playing sad Parisians: Hugh Jackman as Jean Valjean, Russell Crowe as Inspector Javert, Amanda Seyfried as Cosette, Gerard Butler as the Phantom of the Opera. (Wait, scratch that last one.) But the focus in trailer No. 1 is firmly on Anne Hathaway, who as the ill-fated Fantine offers a rendition of “I Dreamed a Dream” that’s as unembellished as her closely cropped hair. If you’re an easy crier you might want to keep handy a box of les tissues.
