After five years of marriage, Ms. Holmes, 33, filed for divorce from Mr. Cruise on Thursday, said Bert Fields, the actor’s lawyer. Mr. Cruise, 49, who years ago proclaimed his love for Ms. Holmes by jumping on Oprah Winfrey’s couch on national television, told The Associated Press through a spokeswoman that he is “deeply saddened and is concentrating on his three children.”
In addition to the couple’s 6-year-old – and much photographed — daughter, Suri, Mr. Cruise has two children with his previous wife, Nicole Kidman. The actor was also previously married to Mimi Rogers. This was Ms. Holmes’ first marriage. Her attorney Jonathan Wolfe said, “Katie’s primary concern remains, as it always has been, her daughter’s best interest.”
Mr. Cruise wed Ms. Holmes in 2006 in an Italian castle.
Ms. Holmes appeared to have filed anonymously in New York. Mr. Cruise recently showed up alone to premieres for his new musical film, “Rock of Ages.” News of the divorce was first reported by People magazine.
