One of the theater producers aiming Nora Ephron’s new play “Lucky Guy” for Broadway confirmed on Thursday that he is going forward with the show, a bio-drama about the New York newspaper columnist Mike McAlary. Ms. Ephron, a celebrated humorist and Oscar-nominated screenwriter, died on Tuesday at the age of 71 from pneumonia brought on by acute myeloid leukemia.

In a statement the producer, Colin Callender, expressed condolences to Ms. Ephron’s family and praised her “incomparable talent, wit and heart.” Mr. Callender, a former president of HBO Films, then added, “We are honored to be part of her legacy and remain committed to seeing her magnificent work ‘Lucky Guy’ shine on Broadway and can think of no more fitting tribute to her extraordinary writing and remarkable body of work.”

In May, representatives for Tom Hanks said he was in negotiations to make his Broadway debut in Ms. Ephron’s play as Mr. McAlary, a hard-charging journalist who covered cops, crime and police department scandals in the 1980s and ‘90s before dying at 41 in 1998. On Thursday, a spokeswoman for Mr. Hanks referred questions about his status to a spokesman for Mr. Callender, who declined to comment. Mr. Hanks was close to Ms. Ephron and starred in two of her films, “Sleepless in Seattle” and “You’ve Got Mail.”

The spokesman for Mr. Callender also declined to comment on the play’s timetable for Broadway and who would handle the script rewrites that typically occur during rehearsals and preview performances of new plays. Before Ms. Ephron’s death, the producers had been planning to start rehearsals in January and open on Broadway in late winter or early spring. The Tony winner George C. Wolfe is attached to direct the play.
