Dark Knight continues UK chart reign

The Christopher Nolan film took £7.28m easily beating its nearest rival, animated film The Lorax, which entered the chart at two.

The Dr Seuss film took £1.85m, while Ice Age: Continental Drift fell one place to three after taking £1.54m.

The next highest new entry was music documentary Searching For Sugar Man, which opened at seven.

The film, about Mexican-American musician Sixto Rodriguez, took £68,857 from the 27 screens it was shown in, averaging £2,459 per screen.

By comparison, Ice Age took an average £2,981 per screen across 518 sites, while number four film, The Amazing Spider-Man, averaged £1,452 per screen across 473 sites.

After a second successful week, The Dark Knight Rises has now become the fasting-grossing film of 2012 in the UK, having crossed the £30m mark in 10 days.

It beat Avengers Assemble, which took 12 days to reach the same total.

Meanwhile, Aardman's The Pirates! In an Adventure with Scientists leapt back up the chart from 24 to number eight after doubling the amount of screens it was shown in, capitalising on the school holidays.

Bollywood film Carry On Jatta was the only other new entry in the top 10 at nine, averaging £4,084 at each of the nine screens it was shown in.
