The hospital in Pointe-a-Pitre has said he was now in resuscitation and is "judged to be stable".
The singer, hugely successful in France, was flown by helicopter to the Guadeloupe hospital from the nearby island of Saint-Barthelemy.
Hallyday, 69, fell ill on Saturday while on holiday.
Earlier, reports said he was suffering from tachycardia - an abnormally fast heartbeat. But his producer is quoted as saying Mr Hallyday was being treated for bronchitis.
The hospital statement did not go into the details of Mr Hallyday's condition, saying only that the singer would soon "be transferred" and referring to a call by his family to "respect his privacy and his dignity" during the transfer.
Earlier, the French news channel TF1 said he was in intensive care and is conscious.
RTL radio reports his wife Laetitia and other family members are with him and want to transfer him to the French island of Martinique.
He has been recording a new album, expected to be released in November.
In December 2009, Hallyday fell gravely ill after a hernia operation and was briefly put into an induced coma in a Los Angeles hospital.
