One Cinderella Apparently Not Enough for Broadway

Another revisionist Cinderella is bound for Broadway.

The 1998 Drew Barrymore movie “Ever After,” a twist on the classic girl-with-the-glass-slipper story, has been turned into a stage musical that the Tony Award winner Kathleen Marshall plans to direct and choreograph on Broadway during the 2013-14 season, the musical’s producers announced on Tuesday. The show features music by Zina Goldrich and a book and lyrics by Marcy Heisler, whose collaborations include the Off Broadway musical “Junie B. Jones.”

Like the movie version, the stage adaptation centers on Danielle, a spirited young Frenchwoman in the 16th century who faces down a cruel stepmother and wins the love of a crown prince. According to the press announcement, “This new musical sets the record straight on the fable of Cinderella, showing how a strong-willed, independent girl can make her dreams come true without the help of fairy godmothers, talking mice, or magic pumpkins.” Performance dates and casting will be announced later.

A different group of Broadway producers has already announced plans to mount “Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella” on Broadway in the 2012-13 season, with an updated book by Douglas Carter Beane (“Lysistrata Jones”) that includes its own modish enhancements, such as Cinderella rescuing the prince.

Ms. Marshall has won three Tonys for choreography: for the Broadway revivals of “Anything Goes,” “The Pajama Game” and “Wonderful Town” — all of which she directed as well. Her new musical, “Nice Work If You Can Get It,” opened on Broadway this spring and she has been nominated for Tonys for direction and choreography for that production.
