On Wednesday, comic book fans who pick up issue No. 2 of “Earth 2,” published by DC Comics, will meet the company’s latest gay hero. The story involves Alan Scott, who longtime readers will know is destined to become Green Lantern. In the issue, fans will meet his boyfriend and witness the beginning of Scott’s journey toward becoming the emerald hero.
The character was originally introduced in 1940, eventually fathering children (the heroes Jade and Obsidian) and becoming an elder statesman to DC’s newer heroes, including the modern day Green Lantern (Hal Jordan), portrayed by Ryan Reynolds in the “Green Lantern” film last year.
As part of the “New 52,” a company-wide reintroduction of DC’s heroes in 52 new series that began last year, Scott is in the prime of his life and gay. “By making Alan Scott young again, one of the few downsides was that we no longer have Obsidian, his gay son,” said James Robinson, the writer of “Earth 2,” who described Green Lantern as his favorite Golden Age character. “Immediately, I thought, why don’t we make Alan Scott gay? We’ll have a team leader who is dynamic, will risk his life for the people, and who happens to be gay.”
