‘The Avengers,’ a Week Away at Home, Leads Overseas

All of Hollywood’s action over the weekend was overseas, where Walt Disney Studios released “The Avengers” in 39 markets and took in $178.4 million. This superhero movie, which arrives in the United States next weekend (kicking off moviedom’s summer season), set records in 12 territories.

In contrast, North America had a painful weekend as “The Five-Year Engagement” flopped, contributing to a 30 percent decline in total ticket sales compared with the same period last year. The No. 1 movie was a holdover, “Think Like a Man” (Sony), which took in about $18 million for a two-week total of $60.9 million, according to Hollywood.com, which compiles box-office data.

“The Pirates! Band of Misfits” (Sony) rode strong reviews to second place, selling about $11.4 million in tickets. Zac Efron’s weepy romance “The Lucky One” (Warner Brothers) and “The Hunger Games” (Lionsgate) tied for third place with about $11.3 million in ticket sales. In two weeks of release, “The Lucky One” has taken in about $40 million, while “The Hunger Games” has a six-week total of $372.5 million. “The Five-Year Engagement” (Universal Pictures) limped across the finish line in fifth place, taking in an estimated $11.2 million. “Engagement,” a comedy produced by Judd Apatow and starring Jason Segel and Emily Blunt, probably suffered from wedding-comedy burnout and a marketing campaign that tried too hard to ride the coattails of “Bridesmaids,” which was also produced by Mr. Apatow. Universal protected itself by spending a relatively modest $30 million to make the movie.
