A play about a young, lost, broken-hearted antihero, with a knack for empathy but a little clueless about life’s problems? Paging Jake Gyllenhaal! Mr. Gyllenhaal, who became a movie star for poignant performances in “Donnie Darko” and “Brokeback Mountain,” will make his American stage debut this summer in the Roundabout Theater Company production of “If There Is I Haven’t Found It Yet,” a British play that turns on an overweight teenager’s relationship to her drifter uncle (Mr. Gyllenhaal).

Roundabout announced on Thursday that the play, written by Nick Payne (“Constellations”) and directed by Michael Longhurst, would begin performances Off Broadway on Aug. 24 at the Laura Pels Theater and run through Nov. 25. “If There Is I Haven’t Found It Yet” had an acclaimed run at the Bush Theater in London in 2009; Mr. Payne and Mr. Longhurst, meanwhile, worked together this winter on Royal Court’s production of “Constellations.”

Mr. Gyllenhaal made his stage debut a decade ago in a London production of Kenneth Lonergan’s “This is Our Youth.” His co-stars in the new Roundabout production will be announced later.

The theater company also said Thursday that the next production for its Roundabout Underground series of new plays would be “Bad Jews,” written by Joshua Elias Harmon and directed by Daniel Aukin (“4000 Miles”). The comedy centers on a college senior named Daphna Feygenbaum who clashes with her cousin and his shiksa girlfriend over a family heirloom, among other things. Performances are scheduled for Oct. 5-Dec. 16 at Roundabout’s black box theater. Casting will be announced later.
