‘Think Like a Man’ Tops the Weekend Box Office

The No. 1 movie in North America over the weekend, and by a long shot (sorry, Zac Efron), came as a shock to the movie industry: “Think Like a Man,” a low-budget ensemble comedy aimed at African-American audiences, took in an estimated $33 million, according to Hollywood.com, which compiles box-office data. Sony spent less than $13 million to make this film, which is based on Steve Harvey’s book “Act Like a Lady, Think Like a Man” and features the comedian Kevin Hart.

A vehicle for Mr. Efron, “The Lucky One” (Warner Brothers), was second with about $22.8 million in ticket sales. Mr. Efron has been struggling to transition from “High School Musical” heartthrob to grown-up movie star, and “The Lucky One,” based on a Nicholas Sparks novel, was seen as an easy way for him to score. While the film missed No. 1, it had a bigger opening weekend than some industry analysts had predicted. It cost about $25 million to make, and Mr. Sparks’s weepy dramas (this is the seventh to make it to the big screen) tend to have box-office staying power.

“The Hunger Games” (Lionsgate) was third, selling about $13.5 million in tickets for a five-week total of $356.9 million. An inexpensive Disneynature documentary, “Chimpanzee,” was a surprising fourth, taking in about $10.2 million. “The Three Stooges” (20th Century Fox) rounded out the top five with an estimated $9.2 million in sales, lifting its two-week total to $29.4 million.
