Reimagined ‘Cinderella’ Casts Its Leading Couple

The Broadway-bound production of “Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella” has found a leading lady who fits the glass slipper – as well as the actor to play her prince. Laura Osnes, who starred as the outlaw Bonnie Parker in the Broadway musical “Bonnie & Clyde” last year, will play a re-invented Cinderella in the production aiming to open during the 2012-13 theater season, while Santino Fontana (“Sons of the Prophet,” “Billy Elliot”) will play the prince, the show’s producers said on Wednesday.

The Rodgers and Hammerstein version of “Cinderella” began as a television musical in 1957, and has been performed in theaters and opera houses but never on Broadway. The new production features a freshly written book by Douglas Carter Beane (“Lysistrata Jones,” “The Little Dog Laughed”), who has added some modern-minded twists to the classic story; this time around, for instance, it is Cinderella who rescues the prince.

Ms. Osnes also played the ingénue Hope Harcourt in the current Broadway revival of “Anything Goes” and was a replacement Nellie Forbush in the 2008 revival of “South Pacific” at Lincoln Center Theater. Mr. Fontana is best known for performances in plays like “Sons of the Prophet” and “The Importance of Being Earnest” last year, but he has also played Matt in “The Fantasticks” Off Broadway and appeared in the 2008 Broadway revival of “Sunday in the Park with George.”

Mark Brokaw (“The Lyons,” “Cry-Baby”) is directing “Cinderella.” Performance dates and a Broadway theater have not been announced.
